Hilde Marie is an educator and Executive Director of EDGE Worldwide. Her work centres on building relationships between students, educators, and local communities.

Early life

Hilde Marie Kvaløsæter grew up in Norway, where creativity and curiosity about the wider world shaped her early life. Music was an important part of her upbringing, while a growing interest in different cultures and experiences gradually led her beyond Scandinavia and into new parts of the world. She later studied Marketing and Intercultural Communication at the Scandinavian School of Marketing, with parts of her studies taking place in Spain and Thailand.

Travel and discovery

Years of travel and cultural exploration eventually led Hilde to Southeast Asia. She first visited Cambodia in 2007, an experience that left a lasting impression. What began as a journey of curiosity gradually became something deeper. It grew into a connection to Cambodia and the people she encountered. In 2009, she returned as a volunteer, deepening her connection to the country and its communities. She returned again in 2011, a period that later led to her work with Babel Guesthouse in Siem Reap.

Responsible tourism

Hilde Marie became involved in responsible tourism initiatives through her work with Babel Guesthouse, where she later became a co-owner. The guesthouse was known for its commitment to ethical employment and for supporting staff through education and professional development. A key part of Babel's philosophy was supporting team members through opportunities for learning and growth, including English language classes, professional training, and access to further education. The experience deepened her understanding of sustainability, cultural exchange, and the responsibilities that come with working across cultures. During her years in Siem Reap, she was also part of the city's creative community, performing music and taking part in cultural events that connected local and international audiences.

Riverside hospitality

Between 2019 and 2022, Hilde Marie owned and managed Bodia Retreat, a riverside homestay set among plantations on the upper Kampot River. Surrounded by mountains, fruit gardens, and the Tuk Chou rapids, the property offered families and small groups a peaceful, natural setting. She looked after the accommodation, bookings, and hospitality day to day, while welcoming guests to the nature-based experiences the river surrounds make possible.

EDGE Worldwide

Today, Hilde Marie serves as Executive Director of EDGE Worldwide, where her work focuses on supporting students and their families through mentorship, pastoral care, and education. The organisation focuses on practical, long-term initiatives developed in partnership with local communities and educators.
